WHY OIL PULLING HAS BEEN AROUND FOR A LONG TIME AND IT’S NOT GONG ANYWHERE

Being a natural approach dental hygienist many of my patients ask me about the benefits of oil pulling. So I decided to put together a “how-to guide”, along with a list of its benefits. While this ancient tradition has many health benefits, I also include how it may not fix all your dental problems.

BACKGROUND ON OIL PULLING

Oil pulling is a 3,000-year-old ayurvedic practice. It has been used to cleanse the mouth and enhance detox in the body. It has been making a comeback for the last 9 (ish) years in the holistic and mainstream space alike. It boasts exciting health benefits like improved oral hygiene and clearer skin.

HOW TO OIL PULL

Oil pulling involves placing approximately a tablespoon of extra virgin cold-pressed oil (I like using coconut oil, but you can also use olive oil or sesame oil too) in your mouth and swishing it around. While swishing the person should try to also “pull” the oil through your teeth. The oil moving around the mouth acts like a sponge cleansing the mouth of loose bacteria and lowering the bacterial load in the mouth. If swished long enough, the oil is able to help rid the body of toxins. The action of swishing needs to be done for at the very least 5 minutes for topical benefits, and up to 20 minutes to receive its full-body benefits. This may seem like a long time when compared to 2 minutes it takes to brush your teeth. I recommend doing it while you shower, so you can just spit it down the drain. Or I have heard of people doing it while they prepare breakfast or on their morning commute.

WHY IS OIL PULLING BENEFICIAL?

Very different mechanisms happen when oil pulling versus what happens just brushing your teeth. Just swishing for 5 minutes with the oil will help draw out toxins of some of the mouth tissues and teeth, possibly getting a brighter smile. At the 15-20 minute mark of swishing the body undergoes an important transformation. The swishing and chewing like movements stimulate enzymes to draw toxins out of the blood. Around the 10-15 minute mark the blood from the *whole entire body* has had the opportunity to circulate through the *whole entire mouth*! Which means the oil can gather the toxins from the whole body. How awesome is that? That is how the oil is able to “pull” out the toxins from the blood. The process is complete when the oil is thin and white. Be very careful NOT TO SWALLOW it! It is full of toxins. Sip it out. Be sure to brush your teeth with an all-natural toothpaste like this one.

While it is possible and still effective to do this process at different times of the day, it is important to do this process on an empty stomach, and early morning is best. At night time, your body undergoes a natural detox process. It is useful to continue to help along this natural detox process by doing more detox in the morning. Do this for 2-3 weeks and see how it changes your oral health. Look for changes like the ones listed here, and comment below to let me know if you experienced any other happy benefits.

  1. Whitens teeth
  2. Increase energy
  3. Detoxes the body

  7. Promotes oral hygiene

WHY OIL PULLING IS NOT GOING TO FIX ALL YOUR DENTAL PROBLEMS

Like I previously stated, oil pulling has great systemic benefits. However, if there is an already existing serious dental issue, oil pulling will not “cure” it. Dental decay, root canals and other oral health issues like bone loss need to be addressed in other ways. Seeing your Dentists regularly (along with oil pulling) will give you an overall idea of how your oral health is fairing. Dental decay that has crossed into the dentin (the second layer of the tooth under the enamel) needs a dental filling. If that decay has crossed the dentin and reach the root (the third layer of the tooth), then that tooth truly needs a root canal.

Other issues like halitosis and chronically bleeding gums need to be addressed from a root cause standpoint! And those issues just so happen to be some of my favorite topics to help with! Click the links and see how you can start addressing them immediately!

Until next time, remember to oil pull, floss, and breath 😊
