Bone Broth -A healing drink

Written on 1/26/2019

The key to healthy bone broth is the quality of the bones. You want to make sure you are using animal products that were raised humanely. By humanely, I mean that the chickens were allowed outside to eat grass, herbs and bugs. That the cows were able to eat grass and roam wide pastures in the sun. Animals, just like humans, need to eat healthy to be healthy. They also need to eat their native diet in order to digest well, and for those vitamins and minerals from their food to translate well into our food, the animal’s consumable products. Healthy animals produce healthy animal products. For example, when a cow gets the chance to live outside, their meat is high in vitamins like beta-carotene, which is a precursor to vitamin A, a very important fat-soluble vitamin. Grass fed beef is also higher in omega 3s and vitamin E. These important fat-soluble vitamins are extremely important for allowing other vitamins and minerals to absorb into our cells. Each of our cells needs a fat-soluble vitamin to help escort the important stuff in, and the toxic stuff out. This goes to show that quality is indeed important. So, make sure you are getting your bones from an organic source, like a health conscience grocery store or the farmers market.

Bone Broth Recipe

Ingredients:

3-5 lbs chicken bones or beef marrow bones

½ tsp pink Himalayan salt

2 TBSP apple cider vinegar

*Herbs and spices to taste; oregano, onion, garlic and thyme tastes great.

Equipment needed: 5 quart crock pot or larger

Instructions:

Place all ingredients into a crock pot. Fill crockpot with filtered water. Let bones simmer on ‘low’ for 12-24 hours for chicken bones. Allow 48 hours for marrow bones. Marrow bones are typically denser and need more time to draw out all the minerals. This slow process helps the minerals to be leached out of the and into the broth. After the desired time, strain the broth to separate out the bones from the broth. The broth can be saved in glass mason jars in the refrigerator for 1-2 weeks. It can be used for cooking grains, soups or my fav, just for sipping on from a mug. My favorite spices to add to my mug of brother are cumin, kelp flakes and black pepper.

A Note On Bone Quality*NOTE: I personally like to leave my bone broth without herbs and spices because I also use it as a super food for my dogs, and herbs and spices upsets their stomachs. I simply just flavor and spice up every different recipe I use the plain bone broth in. Bone broth is very versatile and extremely healing (and tasty) for the gut.
