A New Health Perspective

Like I mentioned in a previous post, I have an entirely different perspective on a person, then say other conventional medical practitioners. As a Registered Dental Hygienist, I investigate the many different tissues in the mouth, and I assess the head and the neck. In these regions of the body, you can truly do some serious detective work on an individual’s health, that is, if you know what you’re looking for…

Let me explain what I mean. As a dental hygienist, in traditional training, we are NOT trained to find vitamin deficiencies, or hormonal imbalances. This is something I have learned over time, by digging into the research, through trial and error on myself and through giving some unsolicited advice and watching it work.

My philosophies are quite different than your average dental hygienist. I've always strived to LEARN MORE about the whole body, not just the mouth. This quest to find out more about the total person, instead of separating the mouth and the body, definitely makes me have difference opinions than other dental professionals.

Where as, another dental professional would say vitamin deficiencies and hormonal imbalances are not within our scope of practice, I would say, "then how do we get it in our scope" ;) . ***Disclaimer: I am not a doctor or dietician, I am just passionate about the mouth body connection and am trying to get others to see this incredible viewpoint also.***

I have this approach because I know most medical professionals are busy, and probably rush (poor dears!). They do not always have the time to investigate the in's and out's of each individuals problems. That's where I come in...

Call it self testing, or personal research, I know that I have seen the change that nutrition can have on a persons health, because I've seen it on myself and some of my patients.

Through a nutrient dense diet a person can have radical changes to their health.

Just remember to eat a well rounded diet that is colorful with seasonal fruits and vegetables, and full of animal protein from happy animals. You want your animal products to be pastured, meaning they lived OUTSIDE (what a concept, right ;)?) and got vitamin D and they were allowed to eat their natural diet. Nothing fake like added hormones, or indigestible grains that were added in as fillers. *Believe me* when I say it will taste SOOOO much better!

Not sure where to start? Go to your local farmers market and buy ingredients there! Those small family owned farms are true warriors for keeping farming the way it should be! And it's super fun to go to the market too! It's a great family day away or entertaining date day with eating great food from different vendors.

If you live in San Diego, where I am from check out this farmers market link to find a market that fits into your schedule. They are on the weekends AND weekdays!

Go explore and try something new! Your body will thank you for it! ;)
